In later temples, as built in jerusalem, there would be additional courtyards that were added to the original three courtyards of the tabernacle space. A lot of the rituals of this space were viewed by the ancient israelites as rituals that were designed to maintain god's presence. This was like a portable temple, a portable sacred space, as they moved around in the wilderness until they could find a permanent type of thing. Yet this is the house of god, a dwelling with them in his tent.
