Yen: For some people, this question of the importance of hope itis almost maybe more of a thought exercise or an academic one in how we bring about change. But there are others, and a lot of these, whose lives and stories, you know, a feature in this book, for whom you can see how having hope could be really challenging. In these indifficult times like these, it can feel, i think, incredibly bleak. And that's why you get thenk, not leastin o things like this, kind of search for alternatives and the rise of popularism and angerand and that frustration building up.
James Plunkett's new book, End State: 9 Ways Society is Broken, draws on his years working in both public policy and at the top tiers of government. A former advisor to UK prime minister Gordon Brown, his book looks at how to reboot some key ideas ranging from commerce to healthcare for a nation such as the UK in order to provide better quality of life for larger sections of society. James joins urbanist, transport and tech specialist Kat Hanna to talk about the book.
