The Importance of Stability in a Wife's Life
Lindsay Madison was a slaveholder in the early 1800s. Her father believed strongly in emancipation but she didn't really imbibe his sense of slavery's incompatibility with the Republic. She intentionally chose among many suitors to be her second husband because that was what she remembered as the most stable moment in her childhood. There is something deeply cynical about it you know unhuman about it and then if she really did say I'll give you a gift and then reneged upon it it's a strange and really disquieting story.
