The History of the Sit Note

There's a long history of people providing evidence of sickness to avoid their obligations. The sick note became this kind of shorthand for that because it was generally agreed, well, if a doctor says that you're ill, then you'll be genuine. And if you can't pass those tests, then you're not genuine and you don't get those benefits.
