The Valar

Tolkien has taken fantasy stories and made them put skin on them. He's done this in a way that they could explain how all the angelology can have an origin in something real. Tolkien is clearly being playing with fantasy, though he's speculating as to what element of that could be real. There are tantalizing hints in scripture that there is a lot more going on.
