The Bali Decision Is Enough for a Visit to Go On

Both sides have multiple interests in returning to and maintaining a stable relationship, but they also have interests cutting the other way. Penny Wang met with Wang Yi in Jakarta on the 13th of July - he's recently resumed his former role as foreign minister at least temporarily. It's patently true for both countries that each has conflicting national interests when it comes to the other. How those conflicting interests are reconciled is the key. One approach could be to ignore one side of the trade-offs. The evidence strongly supports the conclusion that this government has managed relations with Beijing very well since it took office.
