During the depression, it became awkward to flaunt wealth while everyone else was starving. The super rich switched to a strategy of having mansions in the countryside where no one could see them. It's still kind of mysterious why not generally popular aesthetics would please elite taste makers. Though maybe elites are specifically trying to signal not being commoners by choosing the opposite of commoners aesthetic preferences. This sounds a little conspiratorial for an explanation we originally came up with to counter a conspiracy theory, but i can't rule it out.
