This view is also attributed to a fourth century former monk named Joe Vinyon. But we don't have many of his writings, so it's hard to tell if this was completely unknown in the Church prior to Calvin. The fact that sinful Christians would be saved did not mean there were not sins that could cause people to lose their communion with Christ entirely and no longer be a Christian.
