How the Electoral College Works
The electoral college takes the exact same math that we use to determine how senators and representatives are apportioned in the States. Small states wanted the Senate approach where we'd be represented as states, larger states wanted to be represented in terms of population. That's why we have it because we couldn't quite figure out what we thought was the perfectly fair method of representation. We came up with two answers, combined them in a bicameral legislature, and then just simply carried that math forward to choose a president.
