In 1999, after the .com boom, there were a lot of people who believe that the internet had just been another fad. The first kind of application that everyone instantly clamped on to was social media. It spread like wildfire from Myspace and then to Facebook. And it forced all kinds of people to upload their social life into the internet in a way that really had not happened before.
