It's likely that reactions to the practice were extremely va ried and complex. Many ordinary people may have viewed it with a mixture of fear and fascination, as european peasants once felt about our own grisly, drawn out public executions. Some certainly may have enjoyed the spectacle. The sight would have served a purpose in terrifying people into obeying their king. And of course, they would probably have got a guilty rush of pleasure as they thought, i'm glad that's not me up there.
