Tocqueville Changed the Conversation of the Day
The way Tocqueville constructed this is really significant, because he really changed the political science conversation of the day. Remember, Washington feared associations and Madison conceived of planting their negative effect only by multiplying them so that they will cancel each other out. He said, no, no, we really need to use those as a force associated. And we are struggling with finding creative force of associations that have disappeared and haven't been replaced with satisfactory means of participation.
