The Death of the Sun by James Joyce

Lily's lover Tuan doesn't die, but his death haunts the story in that way. There's a certain point in Lily's story where the narrator says she starts to resent her. And again, it's maybe a moment of retroactive superimposition of feeling because at the time when the narrator was hearing Lily's story, she hadn't been hardened. She still thought she was sort of invincible.
