There's no reason for a pressure differential anymore between this point and that point if the gas in both places is at the same temperature. And so therefore, we say that the energy has been degraded, there has been an increase in entropy. The energy is able to do less work. In the limit, the heat energy lost into out of space is actually energy unable to do work. Perhaps even in principle, it is unable toDo work. So then we say, well, what does it mean to say that all energy is this thing that has the capacity to do work? When some of it does not have the capacity to doing work? Well, it's an interesting scientific philosophical question...
