Milton Friedman and George Stigler were once thought of as communists. They argued that if you care about the poor, you should oppose rent control. The right to contract is sacrosanct; no restriction on voluntary contracts is allowable. You have to make the moral argument now I happen to agree with that I happen to think that's right. There's like seven people in the world who agree with us so we're winning our moral arguments then go off into our little treehouse of virtue.
