CHAPTER

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. Jesus: "He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner" This probably means a distance from the Pharisee; he knows he doesn't compare well with him. The Pharisee is in the story to remind us that even the so-called best of us have no right to place confidence in our conduct.
