The imposition of US citizenship in Puerto Rico in the early 20th century has served as a sort of scape ball during times of economic hardship. A record 133,000 Puerto Ricans moved to the mainland in 2018 alone. The probability of someone migrating from Puerto Rico having a graduate degree is twice as high as someone residing on the island.
