The Puritanical Leader of the English Commonwealth, Oliver Cromwell
In 1657, England's puritanical leader, Oliver Cromwell, passed a law making it illegal to serve richly flavored food. This is false and could have been a reason why people say English food isn't very good but it's just not true. The Commonwealth was the political structure during the period 1649-1660 when England and Wales were governed as a republic after the end of the Second English Civil War.
