Is There a Universal Approach to Time Series Forecasting?

Every industry has time series problems, but are there any particular use cases that stand out as good examples? My own work tends to have focused on retail and energy and demography. You'll often find some of the same things crop up in different contexts, but put together in different ways to tailor at further particular application.
