The State Didn't Define Preferences

There are two factors going on. One is that people self-edit when they're asked a question, the other is social mores and cues. People often don't know their own motivation for answering questions in this way. There's a wonderful book by Christian Rudder called Data Collism. He was the founder and chief technology officer of OKCupid. And it's an analysis of all the data he has on dating which show that what people actually do is wildly different than what they say they'll do for both men and women.
