depth psychology is the study of unconscious mental processes and motives, especially in psychoanalytic theory and practice. When people have a dream, usually every character in your dream is you. And that's one of the big reasons people study mythology, is understanding the psyche of people that tell these stories. So joseph campbell was one of the first to begin to connect that idea of mythology and psychology.
