Anne deaton and angus steton looked at the rise in mortality in middle aged non hispanic men and women. They found a gradient, with fewer years of education leading to higher death rates. The diseases that made up that rise were what they called deaths of despair - poisonings due to largely opioids, drugs, suicide and alcohol related deaths.
