Are You Going to Rule? Is That Really Rhetoric?
It's absolutely striking, isn't it, that Bernard is so specific in aligning women with weakness and instability in that letter. His words remind me of Elizabeth the first stillbury speech where she claims to have the body of a weak and feeble woman but the heart and stomach of a king. Wouldn't Melison and people like Matilda have been educated to rule? Oh, absolutely. They would have been Matilda, especially in the court of her husband to be Henry V. And I suspect that once it becomes clear that Baldwin II is not going to have any sons, that the focus shifts similarly to Melison and preparing her for government.
