Lafayette de calb and a few others rowed ashore on june tenth, 17 77. They set foot on dry land after 54 days at sea. The first people he encountered were a small group of enslaved africans crewing in an oyster boat. In his youth, haste and idealistic fantasizing, lafa did not yet register the insurmountable contradiction of american liberty and American slavery.
