The Unseeing of Hope
Of all the wealth and resources of modern society, half or more is poured into making killing machines that can destroy us. And so it's true in the world outside, but it's very much true in ourselves as well. The obituary pages tell us of the news that we are dying away while the birth announcements in fine or print at the side of the page in form of our replacements. But we get no grasp from this of the enormity of the scale. There are five billion of us on the earth and all five billion must be dead on schedule within this lifetime. This vast mortality involving something over 70 million of us each year takes place in relative secrecy.
