In 17 74, chelsea house was built on the site of what is now 9th avenue and 20 hrd street. The first home burnt down in 1774; it was replaced with a much larger mansion upon a hill. Like so many colonial estate owners at this time, the clerks used slave labor. In fact, enslaved people would be kept on the property through the gen nations until slavery was at last abolished in 18 27.
