Dece was a busy place with many air forces present to participate in dissimilar air combat. The italians ran the place in their own idio cratic way, which led to much frustration from our betters and hilarity from ourselves. You'd never get take off clearance until everyone in the formation had confirmed to the tower that their canopy was down and locked. If we went off base for a meal, it was usually down to cagliari for a calisona piza with lots of dechy red - served from polithene half gallon containers. Anyone who got shot would be indicated by a coffin appearing around the a c m i aircraft alerte.
