The Great Heathen Army of the Middle Ages
The great heathen army was able to overthrow and seized control, first of northumbria. And then east anglia followed and was taken over entirely by dans in 869. So it was not a period of just chaos and destruction, but there was a kind of shift over to a new danish regime. The one significant holdout is wessex, that furthest west saxon kingdom,. covering much of what's now somerset and devon. In so far as it existed among anglo saxons, around their own ruling house. They could retreat, if needed, far to the west, away from the zones of danish control.
