CHAPTER

The Lord of the Rings: A Synthesis of Nordic and Germanic Culture

The goblins of the Misty Mountains in the Hobbit are a nod to MacDonald from the beginning. He doesn't do the foot thing explicitly in the Hobbit, but I've always thought that this is one of the reasons why he uses the word goblin instead of orc. It's amazing how a Mirsty was a Norse culture. Because you're reading the older things, you have these boat burials, you have a how or a mound which you build for a hero. You actually have sending out arrows to your allies saying you're about to go to war and you need them to unite with you.
