The Evolution of Genre in Management Journals
In the 80s and 90s, IBM was working on a project using Common Lisp. The Defense Department had supported a lot of projects using Lisp at a lot of different locations. And one of the things that had happened is all these dialects of Lisp had come out. They were becoming increasingly incompatible so you couldn't port things from one computer to another. So we wanted to apply it to some electronic mail. We thought about getting emails from within companies, but then we realized we would have a real fight with the institutional review board if we tried to get hold of individual email by individuals in an organization. That's when we decided to do something empirical.
