The Potato and the Irish Famine
Irish history has been defined by, certainly in the last two or 300 years, a famine. At its core was an over dependence on one crop and a very large population. The potato is not indigenous to Ireland; it's associated with exploitation of natural resources around the world. Amya Sen won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1998 for his book about grain invasion.
