John Dolphin dominated rhythm and blues in Los Angeles in the 1950s. He deliberately targeted both his radio station and record shop at white teenagers, realizing that they would buy music by black musicians if they knew about it. As a result, his record shop often had cues out the door of white teenagers eager to buy the latest R&B records.
