The Tension Between Lincoln and the Moral Imperative
There is this constant tension between that moral imperative and the other quality of Lincoln which was, as you say, a masterful practicing politician. He understood that in a democratic system that a president can't ordain, that a president has to bring people along. And so there's this tension. I think it's the reason, one of the reasons to revisit Lincoln is to see how he negotiated both particular and perennial problems.
