The Biomechanics of Breathing

Breathing is a technique for arousal state control. If someone's got a dysfunctional breathing pattern, there's a whole lot of reasons as to what and how that comes about. People who breathe well at rest should use their diaphragm - the big dome shaped muscle up under your rib cage. But if you're doing those 20,000 breaths a day, which we will do in a day, rather than using it, people end up using all of the muscles around their neck and shoulders. This means they are prone to having more tension and tightness through that. We need our upper chest and your lungs to be moving because part of our nervous system says 'I'm ready'
