There are quite a few parallels between the road and daniel defoe's a journal of the plague year. What we see the father teaching the child to do is essentially read that which is not there, or that which is contrary. And another really eery thing about the road is we see rifling through empty structures. So if we look at a novel like blood meridian, the empty structures, because mc carthy loves his empty structures, are churches in the road, their houses. Yes, owner. Youare owners of the house and the objects that are in it lives. Not post apocalyptic landscape but post-apocalyptic landscape.
