If you eat a high carb diet, low protein and exercise, you're worse off than if you don't exercise. Following the food guide pyramid dramatically reduces the effect of doing exercise. Muscle obviously burns far more calories than fat. So when you gain it back, what you gain back is the fat. And so now what you have is a worse body composition.
