His father was a governor under the samanids, who ruled parts of am central asia and or what's called trans oxania and northern iran. He had apparently some kind of shiite leaning. But avisena rejected these ideas when he heard them being discussed in his father's house and struck out on his own. So if you think about mediaeval philosophers, he's probably the mediaeval philosopher who is most self consciously original.
