It seems to me there really may be different memory mechanisms, as I think you're suggesting. One of them is kind of explicit knowledge, right? It doesn't feel like knowing how many states there are. And then there seem to be still other types of memory. Like, for example, a chess master, in some sense, in their memory are all these patterns of like what boards look good.
