The Role of Memory in Children's Memories

Most people do not remember anything at all or very little from their first few years of life. Catherine Nelson who was one of the leading investigators of the biographical memory argues that children in the context of these conversations gradually are equipped with the tools to explore their own memories and come up with a coherent set of events. Children whose parents engage in so-called elaborative reminiscing where they provide lots of these supports and cues those children may end up with richer biographical memories than children whose parents tend to think of it more as a kind of quiz or question and answer routine.
