"I was the fifth best paid person on the ship and I was getting $10 a month plus some Russian money," he says. "It was cheaper for the Soviet government to put a doctor on a ship, an immersion ship which only had maybe 80% crew" The escape happened in Abidjan, Ivory Coast; it's not known how many people have escaped since then.
