In two thousand nine i took a trip. I didn't do a guided tour. I did everything myself, and basically did everything in chinese. And so that was a completely different experience. But if you can afford it, either one is great. If you are an absolute beginner and don't know anything about chinese or chinese culture, do the guided tour. Be prepared for the tour guide to take you to every single spot where you could possibly spend money. That's finest part of the whole experience.
