The Importance of a Portfolio
You do need a portfolio, especially if you're looking for work. I don't know where designers have got it in their head that they have to have their portfolio be a website. You should make your portfolio in whatever format you can work fastest in. If you have a PDF, you still need a website and I call it kind of like a home base online because you know people are going to Google you.
