When machiavelli is young he tries to use his learning and culture as a root to favor the medici. He chooses exactly the wrong moment to do this, writes poems just months before they kicked him out of florence. The prince is a very focused work of political advice, but it's conceived in the same insane way. It's an attempt to recommend himself to the medici when they return from exile in 15 by using his culture and learning. And he does it again with other works, like franton histories, et cetera.
