Is There a Reading War?
In literacy, people have tried this for a long time. They called it whole language or whole word instruction. And since then it's kind of morphed into a new thing called balanced literacy. It's all a bit of a fiasco if you ask me. I've actually read some of the research, and it seems that there might be some support for some of the things that whole language people are saying. But like long story short, phonics is important, and you should do it really carefully.
