The Moral Sensation

Darwin: Our moral sense is built by all three of these different components. As naturally social animals, human beings are endowed with social instincts and feel concern for others. Human beings can rationally deliberate about their social instincts and social customs to formulate abstract rules of conduct that satisfy their natural desires. This allows for moral progress through history, which eventually leads to formulation of moral principles such as the golden rule.
