We can make estimates based on the average rate at which mutations occur in our genomes. Frustratingly, the fossil record isn't as much help as you might think. It's extremely thin to put it kindly, especially within Africa where our most recent common ancestor almost certainly lived. We'll never know whether Sahelanthropus Chaddensis was our direct ancestor.
