The History of the East India Company

There's a whole historiography that is based upon drawing this line of distinction very clearly between the early period of the British and the later years of the company. I'd like to pour a bit of cold water on that distinction, because when you look at Indian accounts, though in the later period, there does seem to be some regret about the British no longer being in the midst of Indians. In fact, as far as I can tell, no one's particularly concerned with it. At the time, they made a point of settling in, mixing - which must have helped a sort of general acceptability for two or three centuries.
