The History of the Voting Rights Act
The Voting Rights Act is one of the signature examples of Congress using its Section 5 powers to say, here's how we understand equality to be. This was not a partisan issue in 1965. Every one of the extensions and amendments were signed into law by a Republican president. And so, you know, politics didn't used to have the kind of racial connotations in the late 20th century that it now seems to be having again.
