Lincoln's Second Inauguration Speech Is a Dramatic Story
Lincoln was aware of plots to kill him, even as he made his way to the White House. He never let fear stop him from being a leader with whom the public could interact freely. Almost 800,000 people had died under his watch in the Civil War. It soothed him to be reading poems about death and dying in Shakespeare and Longfellow.
