The richest country in the world argument does very little for me. It's how we conceive of what government owes to all its citizens. What are the positives and negatives of funding something in the short term so it doesn't blow up in the long term? We do have a richer society, but it's also more sprawling and heterogeneous and diffuse. And thot everyone has the idea of a shared ethos.
